University of Coimbra

The University of Coimbra (UC) is a Portuguese public and autonomous higher education institution created in 1290. It embraces ten research and education units: Faculties of Law, Medicine, Arts and Humanities, Pharmacy, Economy, Sciences and Technology, Psychology and Education Sciences, Sport Sciences and Physical Education.

The University of Coimbra is part of an UNESCO World Heritage place “University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia”, since 2013.

Internationalization and interdisciplinarity has been one of the University of Coimbra’s main concerns with special effect in Education and Training.

Regarding Education, the University manages 36 undergraduate degrees, 123 master degrees and 72 doctorates. It is worth highlighting the collaboration within MIT and UT Austin, as well as Research and Training activities undertaken by the Centers and Laboratories - over 39 units.

University of Coimbra Institute for Legal research (UCILeR) is one of those units and has aimed from the beginning to excel in the legal and social field as a dynamic research centre devoted to the new challenges posed by the interaction between societal changes and contemporary policies. In order to answer societal challenges related to Law research, this unit approaches the research focused on a tripartite motto «vulnerability/plurality/undecidability», enabling a critical-reflexive thematization and practical experimentation of the possibilities and limits of the answer or answers of law to those challenges.
